Episode 2 Lord Teach Us To Pray

Prayer is one of the most talked about parts of the Christian life, yet many believers still quietly wonder if they’re doing it “right.” In this episode, we walk through Luke 11:1-4 and listen to one of the simplest and most honest requests ever made to Jesus: “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus responds not with a lecture, but with a pattern that reveals the heart of God and the priorities of heaven.
This episode explores what it means to approach God as Father, depend on Him daily, seek forgiveness, and trust Him for guidance. Prayer is not about performance. It is about relationship.
Show Notes
In Luke 11:1-4, the disciples watched Jesus pray and realized something was different. His prayers carried intimacy, dependence, and authority. So they asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus answered with what we now call the Lord’s Prayer.
This prayer is both simple and deep. It teaches us:
- Prayer begins with relationship: “Father.”
- God’s name and kingdom come before our personal requests.
- Daily dependence matters more than self-sufficiency.
- Forgiveness received should become forgiveness given.
- We need God’s guidance and protection every day.
Jesus wasn’t giving empty religious words to repeat mechanically. He was giving a pattern for approaching God with humility, honesty, and faith.

Short Prayer
Father, teach us to pray with sincerity and faith. Help us to seek Your kingdom first, trust You daily, and walk in forgiveness. Draw us closer to You through prayer and help us depend on You more each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Key Verse (KJV)
“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray…” — Luke 11:1 (KJV)
Scripture Link Host (0:01): Wake up. It's time to kick start your day. You are listening to Scripture Link's daily dose of inspiration. Let's go.
Unknown Speaker (0:14): Good morning, and welcome to this brand new day. This is Scripps and Link's daily dose of inspiration for Tuesday, 05/12/2026, and today is National Nutty Fudge Day. You know, I like fudge, but I'm not real big on nuts in my fudge. But some people are, so if that's your thing, enjoy some nutty fudge day today. What kind of nuts do you like in your fudge?
Speaker 1 (0:44): You know, that might be interesting. If you're reading along in the bible with us today, we're in the gospel John chapters ten and eleven. John chapter ten and eleven. Today, we're gonna continue in our series titled Lord. Some things that that people ask of Jesus to help them as they're trying to build their faith, as they're trying to live for him, as they're trying to to come to Jesus.
Speaker 1 (1:14): And yesterday, we started out. We talked about increasing our faith. For the disciples, forgiveness was something that they needed an increase in faith to be able to do. And each one of us has something in our lives that we look at and say, God, you gotta give me more faith to get through that. And go back and listen to yesterday's episode.
Speaker 1 (1:39): Today, we're continuing in the topic. And we're today, we're continuing in this series, and we're gonna be in Luke chapter number 11, the gospel of Luke chapter number 11. And in verse number one, always read verses one through four, very familiar scripture, you all know it. And it came to pass that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, when ye pray, say our father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Speaker 1 (2:22): Thy kingdom come, thy will be done as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. So after witnessing Jesus praying, one of the disciples asked him, he said, Lord, teach us to pray. Sounds like a valid thing that they were gonna need. Notice as we been studying through the scriptures now the past month and a half, been studying through the gospels, notice the disciples didn't say, Lord, teach us to do miracles.
Speaker 1 (3:17): Lord, teach us to heal. Lord, teach us to to preach. No. They said, Lord, teach us to pray. Prayer is essential.
Speaker 1 (3:28): Prayer is a cornerstone of our relationship with God. And without prayer, we're not gonna be where we need to be. This prayer that that Jesus had had taught them, I don't think he meant that, meant for them to be praying these exact words each and every day, each and every time, but I think he was giving them a pattern to follow, a pattern to use to pray successfully. He starts out the prayer saying, our father. Our father is directing who our prayers are directed to.
Speaker 1 (4:13): It is showing his authority. It is showing his place as lord of our life. Then he says, which art in heaven. It's identifying his kingdom. It's identifying our future home.
Speaker 1 (4:30): It's identifying where he is. Then he says, hallowed be thy name. Means God's name is to be held as sacred. It's to be set apart. It's to be set apart from from common things.
Speaker 1 (4:52): We're we're we're praising God here. These first three elements, our father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, that signifies worship. Our prayers must include worship. We must worship God where all the time, we must worship him twenty four seven, but we must start out our prayers in worship. After that, he says, thy kingdom come, thy will be done as in heaven, so in earth.
Speaker 1 (5:28): Thy kingdom come, it is praying for God's kingdom and God's reign to be established on the earth just as it is in heaven. It's signifying a surrender to God's divine authority. So the next element to prayer, we got we worship, then we surrender. We gotta surrender ourselves to him by praying thy kingdom come, thy will be done. We're surrendering each day to him and that's exactly what we need to do.
Speaker 1 (6:03): I don't know what you're facing today. Many many people might be facing doctor's appointments where they're getting answers to questions as to to their health. Well, surrender to god. Surrender to his will. Surrender to his authority.
Speaker 1 (6:22): I'm not saying you're gonna get an a one squeaky clean doctor's report, but if you surrender to God, that helps us to to put our faith and our trust in him. So we worship him, we surrender. Then he says here in verse number three, give us day by day our daily bread. He's praying for his needs. We're showing a dependence on God.
Speaker 1 (6:52): It's easy for us to walk into Walmart, pick up a sandwich, and go and eat somewhere. But we need to show a dependence on God for all of our needs. We're not independent. We can't fend for ourselves. There's nothing we can do to to be able to take care of ourselves.
Speaker 1 (7:14): Everything we have comes from God. It's a blessing from God. He blessed you with that job so that you can have that house, so that you can have that food that's on your table. He's blessed you with those things. We gotta have that dependence on God.
Speaker 1 (7:31): We gotta depend on him for our needs. We gotta depend on him to to meet our needs. We gotta depend on him to to lead us. And, God, we'll get to that in a minute here. Let me me not get ahead of myself here.
Speaker 1 (7:47): Worship, surrender, dependence. Then he says in verse four, and forgive us our sins for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us. We're asking for forgiveness. We sin so many times a day, and sometimes I don't even think we realize it. And we gotta pray, we gotta ask for forgiveness.
Speaker 1 (8:13): And we also gotta make sure that we forgive those who sinned against us. You know, this forgiveness can't be a one way thing. We can't say, okay, God, forgive me, but I'm not gonna forgive this person over here. No. That's way too much.
Speaker 1 (8:29): Well, don't you think that your sin debt is way too much for God? Well, I mean, that's not the way to put it. Our sin debt costs God everything by sending Jesus to pay the penalty for that. And we can't we we look at our sin as some tiny little thing like an ant when actually our sin is probably like a red more like a redwood tree. We gotta realize, we gotta make sure that that if we're asking God to forgive us, that we in turn are forgiving others.
Speaker 1 (9:06): So we're asking for forgiveness. And finally, the end of verse four, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. We're asking God to direct us, to direct our paths, to direct the way he wants us to go, to direct we could even put in there to direct our speech, to direct our attitudes, to direct our thought train. We're looking for direction. We're looking for God's direction.
Speaker 1 (9:40): She says, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, asking God to keep us from evil, to keep us from sin. So if you wanna have a good prayer life, we need to follow this prayer, the elements of this prayer, worship, surrender, dependence, forgiveness, and leading, asking God to lead us. Is that what your desire is? If you wanna have a prayer life that that'll move mountains, follow this pattern that Jesus taught his disciples. Lord, teach us to pray, and that's what Jesus did.
Speaker 1 (10:29): And we need to to take part in that. We need to to use this to spur our prayer life as well. Think about that as you go through this day and remember, get into God's word and allow God's word to get into you. Then share that word with someone today. Have a blessed day.
Unknown Speaker (10:48): I just heard this funny joke. It's a great joke.
Speaker 3 (10:52): Are you living your life to please God?
Speaker 2 (10:55): You won't believe how funny this is? No. I I really shouldn't tell this kind of joke, but it's so funny. No. No.
Speaker 2 (11:02): No. No. I I can't tell you.
Speaker 3 (11:03): Or are you living to please others?
Speaker 2 (11:05): Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Pretend it's not me telling the joke.
Unknown Speaker (11:08): Okay? You're gonna love this.
Speaker 3 (11:09): Is your love for God only worth a joke? Another message from Lifeline Productions located on the web at lifelinepro.com.
