Episode 1 When Darkness has a Purpose

Episode 1 When Darkness has a Purpose

Why would a loving God allow blindness, weakness, or struggle? In this episode, we explore how what looks like darkness in our lives can actually be the stage where God reveals His greatest work. Through the story of the man born blind, Paul’s thorn, and Jesus’ mission to seek the lost, we uncover a powerful truth: your struggle is not wasted—it’s a setup for God’s glory.

In John 9, the disciples asked a question many of us still ask today: “Who sinned?” They assumed the man’s blindness had to be someone’s fault. But Jesus shifted their perspective completely.

This man wasn’t blind because of sin—he was blind so that the works of God could be revealed in him.

That’s a hard truth, but a freeing one. Not everything painful in your life is punishment. Sometimes, it’s preparation.

Paul understood this deeply. In 2 Corinthians 12, he begged God three times to remove his thorn in the flesh. God didn’t remove it—but He gave Paul something greater: grace. “My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

And then we see the heart of Jesus in Luke 19:10—He came to seek and save the lost. That includes those in physical darkness, spiritual blindness, and seasons where nothing makes sense.

Your darkness is not the end of your story. It may be the very place where Jesus shows up as the light.

Application Questions:

  1. Have you been viewing your struggles as punishment instead of purpose?
  1. What “thorn” in your life have you been asking God to remove?
  1. How might God be using your weakness to reveal His strength?
  1. In what ways can you trust Jesus to bring light into your current situation?
  1. Who in your life needs to hear that their struggle isn’t wasted?

Short Prayer:

Lord, help me to trust You even when I don’t understand what I’m going through. Teach me to see my struggles not as setbacks, but as opportunities for Your power to be revealed. Give me strength in my weakness and remind me that You are always at work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Key Verse (KJV):

John 9:3 –

“Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.”

Host (0:01): Wake up. It's time to kick start your day. You are listening to Scripture Link's daily dose of inspiration. Let's go.

Host (0:14): Good morning, and welcome to this brand new day. This description links daily dose of inspiration for Monday, 05/18/2026. And I'm trying to look up what what national holidays are today. Here we go. What do we got today?

Host (0:38): It's national visit your relatives day. It might be a good one to to do, especially if your relatives are getting a little little elderly. It also is national no dirty dishes day. There we go. Couple of things to celebrate today as we look at Monday, 05/18/2026.

Host (1:03): If you're reading through the scriptures with us, today we're gonna be looking at Acts chapter two and three. Acts chapter number two and three. And last week we ended the series about Lord and questions that are statements that proved a real faith. We ended it with looking at this man who was born blind in John chapter number nine. And as we're going through the weekend, the Lord impressed on me to talk a little bit more about this because this chapter, I mean, this chapter could be turned into a movie nowadays, and it'll probably be a pretty good one as well.

Host (1:50): And so we're gonna break this down and take a look at at what we can learn here. The series title, if you've seen the picture on the post here, the series title is From Darkness to Sight, And I think it'll do us some good here. Today, we're gonna look at the first part of this series. We're gonna look at verses one through five of John chapter number nine. And scripture says, and as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth and his disciples asked him saying, master, who did sin, this man or his parents that he was born blind?

Host (2:34): Jesus answered, neither hath this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day and the night cometh when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. Great stuff we see here. Let's take a look at a background seats.

Host (3:02): We'll see what's going on here in this section here. Back in chapter number eight, Jesus was teaching in the temple, the Pharisees through a woman caught in adultery in front of him and tried to trip him up. He went on and taught about other things. And we see here at the end of of John chapter eight, he was having a a discussion and encounter with the Pharisee with the Pharisees. And as he

Unknown Speaker (3:35): was

Host (3:35): leaving, as he was going through the midst of the Pharisees, the midst of those that were challenging him, as he went by, he saw a blind man, which was blind from his birth. And the disciples asked him here in verse number two, Master, who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Looking at some things from biblical scholars and then the commentaries and things, it had said that in this era, people had thought that diseases or disabilities were the penalties for personal or parental sin. In other words, they thought that if this man had a disease like this man who was born blind, he had that disease, he had that disability, and it was their thinking that, well, he must have sinned while he was in the womb or his parents must have sinned and this was the penalty for their sin. Their child was born with with a disability.

Host (4:43): And Jesus reveals here in verse number three, he said, neither hath this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. Jesus gives a shocking answer here, one that I'm sure the disciples didn't expect, but it's one that should excite us. He said, neither hath this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made known in him. Did you ever stop and think that the disease you have or the disability that you have today could be so that God's power will move through you or God's power will be shown through you? What an awesome thought and what a humbling thought.

Host (5:36): And and that's what was about to happen to this man. He was about to get his healing and the power of God was gonna be brought through there. If we go over to second Corinthians chapter number 12, Paul is talking about his thorn in the flesh. And in verse seven, he refers to it as a messenger of Satan. And we read this in verses nine and ten, eight, nine and ten.

Host (6:12): Second Corinthians chapter 12 verses eight through 10. For this thing, talking about his thorn in the flesh, he said, I besought the Lord thrice or three times that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, my grace is sufficient for thee for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, will I rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities and reproaches and necessities and persecutions and distresses for Christ's sake for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Host (6:56): You see here the diseases that we struggle with and the disabilities that we struggle with are sometimes brought so that God will work through them. God did a mighty work through the apostle Paul in in his three or four missionary journeys that he had in his his writing of most of the New Testament, and God did a mighty work in his life in spite of his disability, whatever that thorn in the flesh was. There were some scholars that said that he had a a stuttering issue. Whether that was the the thorn, I don't know. Bible doesn't tell us what it was.

Host (7:36): But Paul sought God three times that he might be healed from it. I wonder how many times this blind man might have prayed and asked for healing. And I wonder how many times you had prayed for your healing from whatever disease or disability that you may have had that you may have. But take take note of this and and think about this when we're in verse number nine of second Corinthians chapter 12, when God said, my grace is sufficient for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Our weaknesses reveal the strength of God.

Host (8:22): Our weaknesses reveal our weaknesses reveal God working in our lives and our our sometimes our weaknesses is brought about to manifest God, to manifest his power, and to make his power known and to bring glory to God. That's why I tell you all the time when I'm when I'm doing these episodes that we need to make sure we're telling others about what God is doing in your life because that could be the the witness that they need to hear to put their faith in him. Back in John chapter nine, Jesus continues his statement saying, I must work the works of him that sent me. Jesus has work he has to do and he realizes that and he sees work he has to do for this this blind man. Jesus has work he needs to do.

Host (9:14): Remember what he said in Luke chapter nineteen and twenty chapter 19 and verse number 10, Jesus said, for the son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. And that's what he is about to do. He found somebody that needed healing, that needed the grace of God in their life, that needed healing, and he's about to do the work of God. So friends, as you go through this day, maybe instead of praying and asking God to take away whatever disease or whatever disability you have, maybe you ought to pray to him and say, God, show your power through my disability. Show your power through my disease and see how God moves into your life then.

Host (10:07): Think about that as you go through this day and remember, get into God's word and allow God's word to get into you. Then share that word with someone today. Have a blessed day.

Unknown Speaker (10:20): Agent x, your next mission will require a special weapon. Like this telephone here 's really a camera? Oops. I meant this telephone over here. No.

Unknown Speaker (10:30): On your next mission, you will battle the enemy unseen. Oh, jungle warfare, Not to worry. I know, Fujitsu. Hey. Yeah.

Host (10:39): That was my desk. Oh, sorry. Right. No physical weapon can touch this enemy. You need this.

Host (10:45): Ah, a seemingly harmless bible. It is a bible. Study it. Know it. Oh, I bet there's a small explosive device inside.

Unknown Speaker (10:53): Right? No. A gun? No. A knife.

Unknown Speaker (10:55): It's a bible, and it's more powerful than any weapon we could give you. You know, agent p got a tank shaped like a Porsche. Sure I don't need one of those? This book is your best defense. It provides everything you need.

Unknown Speaker (11:07): Read it. Your life depends on it. Dick gets a watch that's a fax machine, and I get a book. Agent x. I'm reading, sir.

Unknown Speaker (11:14): I'm reading. Another message from Lifeline Productions, the comic strip of radio at lifelinepro.com.
